Data: African Mahogany is generally easy to work with hand tools. It turns, sands, drills, glues and nails adequately but non-ferrous fastenings are recommended to avoid iron staining. It stains and polishes nicely.
General Uses & Products:
African mahogany is used for furniture, flooring, paneling, veneer, plywood, turned items, boatbuilding, interior trim, and musical instruments
Fun Facts:
-The bark and leaves of the African mahogany tree are used in traditional African remedies for fever, malaria, stomach ailments, and skin conditions.
-Freshly cut African mahogany is yellowish red, but turns saturated red after a few days. After exposure to rain and sun, it becomes a silky silver-grey.
Cool ideas: Mahogany is resistant to water, damage and decay so it will not be easily marked. Unlike other woods, it also absorbs sunlight which makes it fade-resistant, so if you are looking for pieces to furnish spaces that will be in contact with direct sunlight then mahogany is a good option.
